Developed in alignment with the Missing Maps Project, MapSwipe empowers users to remotely support humanitarian efforts by engaging in various tasks. These tasks typically involve identifying specific areas of crisis, such as pinpointing villages threatened by a cholera outbreak in regions like the Democratic Republic of Congo. By swiping through satellite images and marking key features like settlements, roads, and rivers, users play a crucial role in contributing valuable data.
By providing this data, users enable mappers to create detailed maps that aid field operations. Traditionally, these mappers would spend extensive periods combing through countless images of uninhabited landscapes in search of isolated communities. With MapSwipe, however, members of the public can dedicate their time to support organizations like Médecins Sans Frontières and the Red Cross, streamlining the effort to locate and assist those in urgent need of aid.
